This is a template for self assessment by a young person or it can be used by an adult with a young person as for group discussion.

  1. Questions:
  • Who are your role models?
  • What industry or sector do they belong to?
  • Why do you admire them?
  • How did they make it to the limelight?
  • How can we develop ourselves to get better?
  • How will we eventually become role models?

Examples can be found easily from sports, movies, professionals’ entrepreneurs: examples can be male or female, young and not so young, local or international, they must be people you can emulate and choose as mentor.

  1. What are some common characteristics of successful people?
  • Social skills and the ability to connect with people
  • Responsible behavior and diligence
  • The show of exceptional skills and knowledge
  • Positive attitude and the can do spirit
  • Being articulate in words, sharp in appearance and savvy
  1. Rate yourself on each of the five characteristics mentioned above.
  • Excellent
  • Very good
  • Good
  • Fair
  • Poor
  1. What do you need to do to improve on each of those characteristics
  • Join groups of  like minded positive youths.
  • Manage relationships by being honest, helpful, respectful of other people’s beliefs and values etc.
  • Volunteer for roles with responsibilities.
  • Improve on how to study through planning and time management.
  • Understand how to set goals, learn to use schedules and time tables, have an accountability partner etc.
  • Learn how to handle criticism, preparing for the unexpected.
  • Learn to manage fear and disappointment.
  • Listen to good radio programs to improve diction and communication skills and read books to improve vocabulary, etc.
  • Be punctual and diligent.
