Nigeria is unique in many ways, our companies don’t have service desk numbers.
When you have a problem, challenge or an issue there is always someone in the organisation we reach out to personally and usually on their personal phones.
Our business and personal relationships overlap the way you will rarely find in other countries. It’s just the way things happen here.
So I called a tried and tested service provider seeking a paid service and in the usual way I called the last person in the company that attended to me on her personal cell phone.
She was cold, quite cold. She told me she no longer worked with the organisation and couldn’t give me any information on who i could contact for information. The call ended with me in deep thought!
Had she been warmer she could have had my business without even marketing me.
Had she been gracious about her former employer she could have endeared me to enquire more about what she does now and how i can patronize her
Had the company been a bit more strategic with their connectivity perhaps they wouldn’t have exposed their clients and their database to their staff (potential competition).
The young lady left her previous employer with some valuable assets but didn’t recognize the opportunity to derive value out of it.
How many of us fall into the category of this organisation and how many of us are the former employee?
If you are a small business owner and every customer is very important to your bottom line it is best you have a dedicated line for your business and it should be strictly used by all your staff.
The cost of managing and maintaining an old customer is far cheaper than recruiting a new customer. Take heed and guard your assets with diligence.
